Beijing, June 21 (TMTPOST) — Beijing Chaoxing Digital Library Information Technology (Chaoxing) is under controversy in China for a massive user information leakage.

The company’s learning app Xuexitong said on Tuesday on its official Weibo page that it received reports of user information leakage on Monday and immediately started an investigation into the matter.

“We conducted an investigation that lasted for over ten hours. We have not yet found any evidence that can confirm the user information leakage reports,” Xuexitong said in the announcement. “We have reported this matter to the law enforcement who has also started their investigation.”

Xuexitong does not store users’ passwords and adopts one-way encrypted storage, which means in theory users’ passwords cannot be leaked, the company said in the announcement. Even internal staff at Xuexitong is unable to acquire users’ passwords. The company claimed that reports of user information leakage that are circulating on the Internet are false.

In the announcement, Xuexitong stressed that the company highly value user information security and will cooperate with the law enforcement in the investigation to ensure user information and date are safe.

M78 Security Team, a WeChat official account, reported on Monday that Xuexitong’s database is being exploited by hackers illegally for profit. It is reported that hackers are illegally accessing users’ personal information, such as names, phone numbers, gender information, institutions and emails, and selling them for profits. It is said that 72.73 million items were stolen from the database.

M78 Security Team has deleted the article. It says that it decided to delete the article to ensure smooth investigation on the matter and to avoid over-exposure when the matter is under investigation.

Xuexitong was one of the learning platforms recommended by the Ministry of Education of China during the pandemic lockdown. It is a learning platform designed for online learning.
