BEIJING, September 2 (TMTPOST) – Another quasi-first-tier city Chengdu with a population of more than 20 million has started static management due to the pandemic after Shanghai. All residents of Chengdu have been required to stay at home since since 18:00 on September 1.

Confirmed cases are rising in Chengdu. After the outbreak related to a gym swimming pool in Jinjiang District last Thursday, the number of positive cases in Chengdu exceeded 100 in a single day last Sunday, and 106 new confirmed cases and 51 asymptomatic infections were reported on Wednesday. A total of 766 cases of new positive infections in Chengdu have been confirmed since last Thursday.

On the morning of September 1, Chengdu authorities issued another notice that the full range of nucleic acid testing would be carried out in the city from September 1 to September 4. All residents would be required to stay indoors from 18:00 on that day. Citizens who are responsible for basic urban operation, medical service and pandemic prevention tasks need to have an electronic pass, work permit and a negative nucleic acid test certificate within 24 hours to get in and out of their apartment communities. Each household can only have one person to go out once a day with a 24-hour nucleic acid negative certificate to pick up living supplies nearby.

Domestic flights at Chengdu Tianfu Airport and Shuangliu Airport were also cancelled extensively. Data from Chinese flight data services company VariFlight shows that a total of 1,029 flights were cancelled at Chengdu"s two airports on September 1, with cancellations accounting for up to 72% of the total.

Other cities in Sichuan Province have also recently strengthened their pandemic control measures. In addition to Chengdu, Nanchong, Ziyang, Xichang and Mianyang City in Sichuan Province have all announced delays in the opening of school in all or some urban areas.
